Members of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) have been giving out the Hugo Award since the early 1950s. Named in honour of early editor Hugo Gernsback, they are awarded for the best of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Worldcon 75 is displaying a collection of Hugos award trophies from many Worldcons since Baycon (1968), including Confiction (1990), Intersection (1995), Interaction (2005), the Hugo rocket that went into space with Guest of Honor Kjell Lindgren for Sasquan (2015), and last year’s Hugo and Retro Hugo from MidAmeriCon II. The 501st began as a simple club for people who enjoyed dressing up as Star Wars bad guys such as Darth Vader and his stormtroopers. It spread rapidly and now has over 10 000 active members in every corner of the globe. As the club grew, the members realised they could use this hobby to do good within their local communities. Members do not get paid for appearances, instead they ask for donations to a charity collection. The 501st Legion collects millions of dollars for charity each year and has earned the nickname “The bad guys doing good.” They are always looking for opportunities to brighten the lives of the less fortunate and to bring awareness to good causes on both a local and global scale. The Traveling People of Color Comics Library is a no-budget, all-volunteer effort run by Claire Light and K. Tempest Bradford. The library, which is currently packed into a suitcase, consists entirely of comics and graphic novels made by writers and artists of color. All the comics are donated. So far this year the Library has been to Wiscon and NorthAmericon, and now it’s visiting us.

Dave Kyle chaired Nycon II in New York City in 1956 and arranged the creation of the World Science Fiction Society (WSFS) banner for that Worldcon. It was made by fan Jean Carroll. It was regularly displayed at Worldcons in the ’50s and ’60s, and was brought back to Worldcons in the late ’80s, where it has been on display ever since. The banner is now managed by the Worldcon Heritage Organization.
