Worldcon 75 is organizing a Finnish con tradition–an amazing science fiction and fantasy flea market for our members. We are offering wonderful books, direct from fans to fans!
Clean your shelves, earn some money for essentials, and most importantly, put some great literature to circulation. We would like to get fantasy, science fiction, horror and other type of speculative fiction. Even small batches will be happily received. You can bring comics, DVDs (no VHS though). You can mix in some mainstream literature and nonfiction, as longs as the main focus is clearly in speculative fiction.
You can price the books yourself. The stall is operated by Worldcon, so the sellers don’t have to spend time behind the desk. Worldcon charges 15 cents + 10 % for every sold item, which is used to cover the costs.
Book series can be sold in a single bundle, but please mark the price of each individual book in the bundle in all books. Bundles must be tied together with some type of twine or paper tape.
You shouldn’t bring anything big or expensive, as we will usually have only one seller and guarding them all will be difficult. This is basically a flea market, so all sold items tend to be cheap.
We are cash only, but you will get your money transferred to your account after the con. If you live abroad, you can receive your money in cash on Sunday as long as we agree on it in advance.
The Science Fiction Flea market will be in the Trade Hall and open the same hours: Wednesday 12:00-18:00, Thursday to Saturday 10:00-18:00 and Sunday 10:00-15:00.
How to offer books for sale
- Sign up as a seller by sending an e-mail to Hanna at scifikirppis@worldcon.fi or sffleamarket@worldcon.fi . From her you will get your seller number. Reserve a number even if you aren’t sure if you’ll bring anything. We should have enough numbers. Signing up ends on 6 August. So be quick!
- Mark your seller number in pencil and clear hand-writing in every book, at the first page in the right top corner, and remember to circle it. Also add there the price you want for that book. Price you can decide yourself, but use even euros, unless the book costs less than 4, so you can use half euros. For example 2,50 is a good number, but 12,90 isn’t. Note that, if the book doesn’t have both the seller number AND the price, we can’t sell it.
- You can bring your books directly to the convention. Bring them any time the Trade Hall is open. Remember to reserve the seller number beforehand though.
- If you volunteer to work at the table over 2 hours, we will only charge you 5 %. If you volunteer for over four hours, the percent will be zero. The 15 cents fee will stay on all occasions.
Unsold books can be taken away at any time before 15:00 on Sunday. Organizers would be happy if you could come to help at the end of the con by clearing the tables. We must be out of the building before six, so we will be working quickly. If you wish, you can donate the unsold books to the Cittadini del Mondo (Citizens of the World) charity, or to the organisers (in which case they will be put up for sale at the next convention in Finland).
If you just leave your unsold books without telling Hanna about donating them she will be quite grumpy so please make arrangements in advance!
In previous flea markets, 65 – 80 % of the books brought have been sold, so taking them back home will be way easier than bringing them.
Signing up for Fantasy Flea Market closes on 6 August 2017. So be quick! It may be possible to sign up later, but we cannot guarantee that there will be any space left. Also if you sign up after the deadline, there will be extra 10 % taken off for Worldcon.
Oh, and the organizers do not get a penny from this, but all the money (minus expenses) will go to Worldcon 75.
Email scifikirppis@worldcon.fi or sffleamarket@worldcon.fi with any questions.
